Between February 2002 and March 2003 I circumnavigated 12,504 miles around the Australian continent on my bicycle, or push bike as they say there. After that I went to New Zealand for three months and met up with a friend and ended up pushing the total mileage to 14,115.7 miles (22717.02 km). I spent 269 days on my bike, 272 days not on my bike, and getting 67 flat tires over those 17 months.
I started and ended my 13 month lap around Australia at Luna Park in St. Kilda/Melbourne.. The distance around Australia (including Tasmania) ended up being about 20,281km (12,600 miles).
One fun thing I did during my trip was to visit six "confluences", which is where a whole-numbered latitude/longitude mark intersects for The Degree Confluence Project.

Took us forever to get out of town today. I couldn't find my spoon this morning. The girls had used my cookware, but the spoon was still in the kitchen. Funny how I carried a thing of gatorade type drink mix from the top of Australia all the way back to Melbourne (like 10,000km or something) and promptly threw it in the trash at Steve and Katrina's, yet I was a little concerned about losing the spoon. Then again, the spoon has been with me the whole trip.
We spent the morning shopping and losing each other. I went to an outdoor shop to get some socks and a frisbee. There was a sign that said "you only get a discount if you've given something to someone or been nice to someone recently". I asked the girl if I took a clock picture of her, if that counted...she said it did...so I got a clock photo and saved four bucks to boot.
Had a nice ride out of Queenstown along the bike path...listening to Ted Nugent and Run DMC.
It was a pretty nice ride today along the side of the lake. We were going to go farther, but there was a nice little rest area by the lake so we just decided to camp there. Spent a small chunk of the evening taking more LED photos.
