Day 99: Town of Etna [mp 1606.50]

Woke up and my balls hurt incredibly bad….the balls of my feet that is. Yes, in case you are wondering, I milked this joke endlessly when other hikers asked how things were going.

Went to Bob’s Ranch House restaurant and had a nice breakfast. Read a bunch more of the Questlove book. Wanted to get it finished so I could mail it home and cut the pack weight.

After breakfast I went to the coffeeshop in town to get proper coffee. Met a guy there named Chet who had a few stories. He told me that Bob’s has a buffet tonight and it is worth going to. I asked him what they served and he pulled out his phone. It was’t a smartphone so I wasn’t sure what he was doing exactly. He pushed a few buttons, paused, then put the phone up to his head. “What is on the buffet tonight?”, he asked.

Ah, the good old solution for finding out information…just call and ask.
After he left I spent awhile uploading a minor ton of photos from my phone up to the travel site.

Cora texted me with an amazing humanclock.com photo. She is at a workshop that Lynda Barry runs. Lynda had drawn up a clock time and Cora got a photo of her with it. If you look on the humanclock Facebook page or on my twitter page (twitter.com/humanclock) you can see the photo. Thanks Cora!

I went to the thrift store but didn’t find anything I needed. I did run into Midnight Chocolate and Cowgirl in there. They were staying at the motel in town.

At the B and B a car showed up and a hiker got out. It was Mild Child. She had gotten about eight miles up the trail and turned around, her foot was really hurting. She is going to go to Sacramento tomorrow and rest her foot a bit.

Finished the Questlove book and got stuff packed up for tomorrow. Going to hit breakfast and the PO and then it is back up to the PCT. It was so nice to have a day off today, holy cow.

Also, I was on the radio last Tuesday (7/16). I will paste this entry in there too. Anyways, I couldn’t write about it since I wanted to surprise Cora. She finally heard the show. Tuesday nights on WFMU FM (airs on the internet too, wfmu.org) there is a show called the Best Show. I called in from the trail with my story about listening to Frankie Teardrop on the Stand By Me bridge. I told myself earlier in the day that if I got service later that night I would call in. I had no service at all for a couple days. Around 7:00pm (the show airs 9-midnight ET) I rounded a ridge and had three bars of service. “Crap…I have to call now”. I was hoping I wouldn’t have service so I could chicken out. The call went good and I can’t believe it was 5-6 minutes long, it felt like two. I was having to hold my solar panel against the setting sun so my phone wouldn’t die. While I was on hold I tried sitting down and I lost service. I had to call back again, fortunately the lines were not super jammed at that moment and I got through in about five minutes.

Then jump to 1:24:00 in the stream you can listen to my call. The show page is here:
